El-Rufai Says He Bears No Grudge Against Those Who Distanced Themselves

Nasir El-Rufai

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has said he bears no hatred or resentment toward former colleagues, friends and family members who have remained silent or distanced themselves from him amid his recent political and legal challenges.

El-Rufai made the comments in a statement titled “My Relationships and the Aftermath,” which he shared on his X account.

The former governor said his decision over the years to support people and causes was driven by his Islamic faith, Arewa upbringing, personal values and conscience rather than an expectation of praise, gratitude or future support.

He said he had stood by individuals and causes he believed in, including during difficult periods, because he considered such actions to be the right thing to do.

El-Rufai acknowledged that people he had previously supported were free to decide how they wanted to respond to his current situation. He said some could choose to defend him publicly, while others could remain silent or distance themselves.

He said he did not intend to judge people simply because their response differed from what he or others might have expected.

According to him, the difficulties he has experienced have provided a clearer perspective on some of his relationships and on how people respond during challenging periods.

El-Rufai said the experience might cause him to reflect more carefully on certain relationships and on what people who look up to him should expect in the future. However, he stressed that his reflection should not be interpreted as a condemnation of those who had chosen a different path.

The former governor also said he had no regrets about supporting people or causes he believed were right.

He maintained that disappointment over the actions of others would not change the principles that had guided his conduct.

Addressing what he described as possible injustice, ingratitude or injury against him, El-Rufai said he was not interested in revenge or retaliation.

He said ultimate accountability belonged to Almighty Allah and that he would leave such judgment to Him.

El-Rufai concluded by saying that his priority was to remain at peace with his conscience and his Creator, while allowing individuals to live with the choices they make and leaving posterity to judge their actions.
