Guardiola Maintains Support for Man City Amid 115 Premier League Charges

Pep Guardiola has repeatedly expressed his support for Manchester City and its leadership as the club faces allegations of 115 breaches of Premier League financial regulations.

The charges, announced by the Premier League in February 2023, followed a lengthy investigation into the club’s financial affairs. Guardiola’s public defence of Manchester City, however, had begun several years earlier.

In May 2019, while responding to allegations concerning payments that were allegedly not properly recorded, Guardiola said the club should be presumed innocent. He also made clear that he trusted Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and chief executive Ferran Soriano.

That position remained unchanged when UEFA imposed a two-season Champions League ban and a €30 million fine on Manchester City in February 2020. Guardiola continued to stand by the club during the dispute.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport later overturned the Champions League ban in July 2020. Guardiola subsequently spoke about the reputational damage suffered by the club while maintaining that Manchester City deserved the presumption of innocence.

In May 2022, Guardiola said his position would change if he discovered that senior executives had lied to him about the club’s financial conduct. His comments reflected the importance he placed on being able to trust the club’s leadership.

After the Premier League charges were announced in 2023, Guardiola called for the matter to be resolved as quickly as possible. He said he would prefer an immediate outcome rather than allowing the case to continue indefinitely.

The manager also indicated that his relationship with Manchester City would not automatically end even if the club were relegated as a result of the case. His comments reinforced his stated commitment to the club while the legal process continued.

When the independent hearing eventually began in late 2024, Guardiola welcomed the development but said his main focus remained on football rather than the legal proceedings.

A difficult run of four consecutive defeats later that year also did not lead him to use the financial case as an excuse for the team's results.

According to the source material, Guardiola announced his departure in May 2026 while again reiterating his trust in Manchester City’s leadership.

Throughout the period covered, his position remained centred on supporting the club while allowing the Premier League's case and the independent process to determine the outcome of the allegations.
