Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and former Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, has said that his nearly four decades of involvement in Nigerian politics have not exposed him to a president with better plans for the country than President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Masari made the statement while addressing a group of women at a recent public function reportedly held in Kaduna. His remarks were contained in a video published on Tuesday by HM Arewa, a Hausa-language media platform.
According to Masari, his assessment was based on his long experience of observing different political administrations in Nigeria.
He also rejected criticisms that the Tinubu administration had achieved little, arguing that similar criticisms had been directed at previous governments.
Masari referred to the administrations of former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, saying both faced accusations involving sectionalism and tribalism during their time in office.
He argued that similar criticisms were now being directed at Tinubu.
“The people who claim that Bola Ahmed Tinubu has done nothing are the kind of people who never appreciate when someone is doing well,” Masari said.
The former governor also criticised the use of ethnic and religious sentiments in political discussions, questioning attempts to associate particular religions exclusively with specific ethnic groups.
He urged women preachers to use their influence within their families and communities to discourage divisive rhetoric as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general election.
Masari said women had an important role to play in influencing political conversations within their households and communities, while describing some of the divisive rhetoric as being driven by selfish interests.
Masari served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2007 and was Governor of Katsina State from 2015 to 2023. Recent reports also state that he was appointed Deputy Director-General, Parliamentary Mobilisation, of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council for Tinubu's 2027 re-election campaign.
