2027: Gbenga Daniel’s Brother Rejects Ancestry Row, Backs Yayi for Ogun Governorship

The younger brother of former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel, Olola Daniel, has thrown his support behind the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, ahead of the 2027 election.

Daniel, who leads Ogun Progressive People and the Progressive People Diaspora Coalition for YAYI, described the ongoing controversy over Adeola’s ancestry as a distraction, insisting that the election should instead centre on governance, development, accountability and the candidates’ ability to deliver.

In a statement issued on Sunday, he alleged that opposition elements were promoting the ancestry issue to divert attention from Adeola’s ambition to govern the state.

He urged voters to assess the contenders based on their records, qualifications, experience and policy proposals, rather than controversies surrounding their backgrounds.

Daniel recalled that his family encountered similar allegations when his elder brother, Gbenga Daniel, declared his intention to contest the Ogun governorship election in 2003.

He argued that such controversies should not overshadow discussions about the future of the state and the issues affecting residents.

The OPP convener also maintained that Adeola had fulfilled the constitutional requirements for the governorship contest and described the allegations against the senator as political propaganda.

Explaining his decision to support Adeola, Daniel cited the senator’s public service record, legislative experience and development priorities.

He expressed optimism that an Adeola-led administration would improve residents’ welfare and accelerate development at the grassroots.

Daniel disclosed that Ogun Progressive People had operated as a political support group since 2022 and had developed grassroots structures across the state.

He added that the Progressive People Diaspora Coalition for YAYI was established after consultations among Ogun indigenes living abroad who believed Adeola should be considered for the governorship.

According to him, both groups are mobilising support for Adeola and other APC candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections through political engagement, public awareness, strategic collaboration and grassroots mobilisation.

Daniel also said he expected an Adeola administration to build on the development initiatives of the incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun, while introducing policies aimed at addressing the needs of residents across the state.

He linked his involvement in the political project to his broader interest in community development and humanitarian service through his Faith-in-Kindness Foundation.

Daniel said the foundation had assisted indigent students with school fees and supported people facing various forms of hardship.

He maintained that such interventions reflected his belief that leadership should be measured by tangible efforts to improve people’s lives and not merely by political promises.

He reaffirmed his commitment to mobilising support for the APC in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 elections, while calling on political stakeholders to keep the campaign focused on constructive engagement and development.

Daniel said voters should be presented with meaningful choices on the future of Ogun State, the welfare of its residents and the policies that would shape the state under the next administration.
