Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, has promised to install between 11 and 15 kilowatts of solar power on every Nigerian roof within 11 months if elected president in 2027.
Adebayo made the pledge during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time, saying his administration would pursue large-scale solar power development as part of its plan to address Nigeria’s electricity challenges.
He said solar-panel manufacturing factories would be established across the country, while Nigerians would be trained to install and maintain solar systems.
“I promise that between 11 to 15 kilowatts of solar power will be put on every roof within 11 months,” Adebayo said.
The SDP candidate said he had previously experimented with solar technology in his hometown, where he claimed to have trained about 2,000 people. He also said he manufactures solar panels and lithium batteries, while sourcing inverters from elsewhere.
Adebayo proposed partnerships with countries including China, Turkey and India to establish solar-panel factories in Nigeria and train local workers to operate them.
According to him, solar clusters would provide electricity for households while creating employment and could generate up to 32,000 megawatts.
He proposed using the national grid primarily as a backup system, so that power could be supplied from the grid whenever a solar cluster experiences a failure.
Adebayo also said his administration would consider strategic government investments in sectors such as aviation and manufacturing through operating and maintenance contracts.
On energy security, he pledged to prioritise domestic refining and tackle crude oil theft. He claimed that up to 900,000 barrels of crude oil were still being stolen and argued that recovering the oil would help increase supply without additional government expenditure.
He further argued that government investment in sectors such as electricity and education could create jobs while improving essential services.
