The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, has described the recent legislative bye-elections in four states as an important part of the Commission’s preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Amupitan made the remarks on Saturday while monitoring developments from INEC’s National Situation Room at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
The bye-elections were held in constituencies across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states.
The affected constituencies were Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State, Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State, Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi State, and Udu State Constituency in Delta State.
According to the INEC chairman, every electoral exercise provides an opportunity for the Commission to assess and improve its preparations for future elections.
He said the four bye-elections would provide operational lessons as INEC develops its plans for the 2027 general elections.
Amupitan said the Commission would use such exercises to assess its logistics, technology deployment and administrative readiness in the field.
He also said the National Situation Room was used to monitor developments and address operational challenges that emerged before polling commenced.
The INEC chairman stated that issues identified during the preparations were resolved, while stressing the need for continuous improvement in the Commission’s electoral processes.
He commended officials involved in the monitoring exercise and the technical team responsible for coordinating information from the different states.
The statement was signed by Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC chairman.
