Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has challenged Ademola Lookman to make a bigger impact after the Nigerian forward featured in his side’s 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in Sunday’s Madrid derby.
Lookman came off the bench in the 67th minute, replacing Alex Baena, with Atletico already holding a 2-0 advantage.
Alejandro Grimaldo and Jonathan David had put Atletico in control before Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger pulled a goal back late in the match. Lookman, however, was unable to make a decisive contribution during his time on the pitch.
Despite recognising the Nigerian’s importance to the team, Simeone admitted that he expected more from some of his substitutes and specifically pointed to Lookman as one player who needed to have a greater influence on the game.
“We needed the talent of Koke, a little more freshness from Julián, and that Lookman entered better than he did,” Simeone said, according to Fichajes.
The victory gives Atletico an important boost in the Madrid derby, while Simeone will now look for Lookman and the rest of his attacking options to provide a stronger impact in their upcoming fixtures.
