Leaders of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State have cautioned supporters of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, against actions that could deepen divisions within the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The warning came from the Ondo APC Elders Forum, which said growing perceptions of a rift between the two political figures must not be allowed to undermine the party’s unity or its electoral prospects.
Speaking at the group’s monthly meeting in Akure, the forum’s chairman, Demola Ijabiyi, acknowledged concerns over the relationship between the governor and the minister but stressed that both leaders share a common political objective.
He said the party’s priority remains securing widespread support in the state for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu, noting that the roles of both Aiyedatiwa and Tunji-Ojo should complement each other rather than create rivalry.
Ijabiyi explained that the existence of separate political structures within the party should not be mistaken for disunity, pointing out that similar arrangements existed during previous election campaigns.
He, however, warned that unhealthy competition and actions capable of creating the impression of open conflict must be avoided, urging supporters of both leaders to exercise restraint in their conduct and public statements.
According to him, backing one political figure should not translate into hostility toward another within the same party, as such behaviour could weaken the APC’s chances ahead of the elections.
The elders’ forum also made it clear that it would not align with any faction, maintaining that its focus is on fostering cooperation among party stakeholders in the state.
Ijabiyi said the group remains committed to promoting unity within the APC and mobilising support for President Tinubu’s re-election, adding that collaboration among party leaders is essential to achieving that goal.
The forum reiterated its call for cohesion among party members, warning that internal divisions could jeopardise the party’s performance in the 2027 polls.
